Last full day

We biked 54 miles from Standish Hickey state park past Fort Bragg for our last full day. We had the biggest hill of the entire trip, which Bunny mastered with ease. Cruising down the other side on windy, mountain roads was amazing. We gradually weaved back to the coast where the temps dropped again and fog reappeared ...

End of the line!

We made it. In the car on the way back now!

A day in the sun

We rode from Redway to Standish Hickey State Park on Sunday. We had every intention of riding past Leggett and the 2000 ft incline, but the heat was dangerously draining. Temps reached 97 degrees with little shade on our route. We finally took a break at a rv resort, and hung out in their rec room watching Old School. ...

Lack of service

I haven't had much service over the last 3 days, so I apolgize for the lack of updates and location. However, some of you get a wee bit impatient when we actually ride and don't share stories. Just so you know, we have absolutely no stories to tell. Three days of biking down the California coast and no stories.

Avenue of the Giants

We left Fortuna today to begin our gradual two-day ascent to Leggett. The majority of our day was spent cruising the Avenue ofthe Giants. We passed through many towns that had seen better days, but we did manage to rest in Redcrest with some cokes. Later on we met 2 guys heading north on their bikes that seemed to be ...

And this is how we end the day

Yesterday.

12th Day

Redwoods and naps

It's true what they say - getting up earlier does make you more productive. Yesterday was our earliest start, and we covered our greatest amount of miles thus far. Somewhere between 5:30 am and 7:15 pm we biked 47 miles. Don't be fooled, we were not in the saddle that entire time. We hopped on a few buses, took a sweet ...

Lost Coast Brewery

This is how we start our day.

Redwoods

Spent the morning cruising through the park. Now we are picnicking in Orick. I'm ready for a nap.

Early start to a late start with a great ending

Our day began with an early bus ride from Coos Bay to Brookings. We then hung around for awhile in Brookings waiting for the fog to lift (actually just being really lazy and hungry). We finally departed on our bikes for Crescent City after lunch. The ride was relatively flat as we crossed into California. Our fruit sn ...

Anniversary

Of being funemployed! Here's to getting a job.

Peace out

Goodbye to Oregon. Hello, California!

Just one of those days

It was bound to happen. We should have known when two miles into our ride Bunny got pegged in the forehead with a nickle-sized stone. Shortly thereafter, we entered the neverending construction zone. Fortunately, all of the construction workers were super nice: they directed us to the safest areas, made conversation a ...

Things on the side of the road - part 1

Paint roller. Rubber dish gloves. Spread eagle racoon. 3 regular dead racoons. Snake. Glasses. Steak knife. 3 banana peels. 2 apple cores. Tube sock. Lots of baby shoes. Other assorted roadkill. Lizard (alive). Lots of berries. More to come. Our brains are fried.

Oregon dunes

We trekked another 10 miles from Florence to cap our day at 41 miles just south of Dune City. We are at a real campground, Bunny made real fire, and finally sleeping on flat ground under the clear, starry night. We saw our first sun today in 3 days. Bodes well for the rest of our week.

Lighthouses, whales and sea lions

After a nice, lazy day watching lifetime movies and other romantic comedies (think Drew Barrymore marathon), we woke up early to more rain today. So we headed to ship off some extra gear where we hit rush hour in Waldport's post office. Headed to the sparsely stocked grocery to grab food for the day. We covered an am ...

Rain delay

We slept in a bit this morning due to rain. Thought it was easing up so that we could get some good biking in today. But all it did was ease up for our 5-mile jaunt into Waldport. We've picked a cozy motel for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Currently at the laundromat refreshing our clothes. Our gear is strewn about the mote ...

Seal Rock

We missed a post last night due to the lack of service. We pedaled our way from Lincoln City to Seal Rock. It was a 40-mile day, mostly gently rolling hills. And there was actually a seal on a rock. I guess we were pretty lucky because, later that night, we read that despite the name seals are rarely spotted in Seal Ro ...

Buffet

We decided to do some carbohydrating at a buffet here in Newport. I'm pretty sure we might put them out of business even though they've been open since 1979. I'm also pretty sure we burned more calories this morning than we could possibly consume in one sitting. On to dessert!

Whale watching

That's right, whale watching. We stopped at a nice view point, and then Bunny spotted a whale. I didnt believe her because it was so close to the shore, but then i got a few shots with my camera Not a bad stop!

1/2 pound hot pockets

Dinner of champions. We rocked two big climbs today (the biggest we will have), and we covered 40 miles from Netarts to Lincoln City. We are camping at a KOA tonight. That's correct, $31 a night for Kampgrounds. Bunny was tempted by the tether ball and arcade. No swimming pools though. But I am hanging out in the ba ...

Headwinds...

can go **** themselves. Uphill is bad enough without it. Otherwise, making good time/distance today. Oh, who invited the rain?

Day two

Small towns in Oregon are priceless. You all need to bike here and stop at the local stores/take the bus/stop on the side of the road/get offered a coke by a man tending his garden. Day two is going strong, and we're enjoying Gatorade, pringles and trail mix for lunch. We found some amazing sand dunes on the way down ...

Just one more beer

So after our adventures in Tillamook we set off for a campsite. We got a bit ambitious and rode another 7 miles to not find a campsite. Instead we landed ourselves a cozy little cottage with an almost view of the Pacific. Quite spacious and quaint. Then it was dinner time. A little bit of Tillamook icecream for Bunny, ...

Just a beer

All we wanted when we got done at the bike shop was some beer and cheese. Unfortunately, the cheese was a few miles north of town. That was out. So we rode our bikes around 'downtown' trying to find a place to at least have a beer. Our two options were Rendezvous and Corky's. We chose the one that actually had windows ...

Bike shop on day 1!

The valve on my tire broke after our morning climbs. So we hopped on the bus in Wheeler to Tillamook to get to the bike shop. Bike is getting fixed, and we are now ahead of schedule!

Tire issues

Everything is resolved. We learn something new every day.

And off we go!

Planes, trains and automobiles. Oh yeah, and bikes!

We reached our destination after more than a day's worth of travel. We assembled our bikes with minimal issues, if you don't count not knowing how to use a bike pump. We pedaled off into the sunset where we ordered our campsite from a voice box. Set up camp and I quickly realized I have too much crap. Some headlamp i ...

Breakfast

If you've never been on a long distance train, I recommend it just for the people you meet. I enjoyed breakfast with a Shriner, a world traveler, and a stage manager today. All while viewing the sunrise over Mt. Shasta. On another note, the last time I was in Klamath Falls was just over two years ago when I was mappi ...

Sunrise

Sleeping on the train doesn't work well with a bratty neighbor. But thanfully I woke up to this!

Starlight Express

Finally. On the train. Getting my bike checked was way more hassle than it needed to be. Let's just say that I'm an extremely lucky person. More updates from the train later!

PDX

I'll be heading out on the train to PDX tonight. Biking commences tomorrow!

I'll be heading south from Cannon Beach, Oregon all the way to San Francisco, California. We have 2 weeks to make it on 2 wheels. My friend (Bunny) from college will be partaking in this experiment with me. I'm finally ditching the car for an adventure along the pacific coast!
